Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day, the most beautiful holiday of spring, is approaching. On this special day, we celebrate motherhood around the world. Although it is celebrated on different days around the world, in Hungary we celebrate mothers on the first Sunday in May—this year, on May 7.

The Origins of Mother's Day:

  • It originated in ancient Greece, where the Greeks honored Rhea—the wife of Cronus and the mother of many goddesses in Greek mythology—during spring festivals.
  • The modern history of Mother's Day dates back to the 1600s, when, following prayer services held in honor of the Virgin Mary, children would bring gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their mothers.
  • Mother's Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1872 in Boston, and it was declared an official holiday in 1914.
  • The idea for the holiday was brought to Hungary from the United States by Pálné Petri; the very first celebration was held in 1925 at the MÁV machine factory, with the participation of workers’ children. Starting in 1928, a ministerial decree officially designated Mother’s Day as one of the official school holidays.

Ideas to make this year's Mother's Day special:

  • Make their favorite breakfast—there’s no better way to start the day than with breakfast served in bed, along with their favorite fruit drink. Don’t worry, you don’t have to cook a Michelin-starred meal.
  • On Mother's Day, spend the day with your mom. If the weather permits, choose an outdoor activity—go on a picnic, take a trip, or cook a meal over an open fire with the family—so your mom can take a break from her daily routine.
  • If you’ve been living apart, organize a surprise party for him with the help of your siblings and your father. Cook his favorite meals and play the iconic hits that mean the most to him.
  • Get crafty! Even if you're not the most skilled with your hands, a personalized gift—whether you make it yourself or have it made—can be a memory that lasts a lifetime.

It might also be a good idea to create a custom napkin featuring your family’s most important events—a photo from your parents’ wedding, a memorable vacation, a festive or Christmas photo—anything you’d like to remember years from now—or even a table decoration that can adorn the festive table during your Sunday family dinners. This way, your mother can relive her fondest memories while also enjoying a wonderful new experience thanks to this gift.

On Mother's Day, don't forget to wish your grandmothers a happy Mother's Day, too—treat them to some unique gifts as well.

Mother's Day Celebrations at Preschools

As May approaches, the kids are eagerly preparing to perform their Mother’s Day show, which they’ve been working on for so long.

Mothers and grandmothers watch with emotion as their children and grandchildren recite the most beautiful holiday rhymes and poems, sing the folk songs they have learned, and present their handmade gifts.

A large number of parents and family members usually attend the program, and everyone looks for the best spot to get the best view of their child's performance.

One creative solution could be to make a plant tag printed on a napkin, featuring your child’s photo, name, or even their preschool emblem. This would not only solve any potential problems but also serve as a lasting memento—one that, whenever you glance at it, will bring back memories of that special day when you got to see your child’s performance.

Create unique napkins to celebrate this special day.
